I am a fan of the blog Leadership Freak. Dan Rockwell does a great job of discussing leadership topics – and keeping it brief. The byline of his blog is “helping leaders reach higher in 300 words or less.”
When we think of leadership, many attributes come to mind:
- integrity
- humility
- visionary
- communicator
- confident
- courageous
- decisive
- risk-taker
- creative
The list goes on. But none of these are the ‘key’ that Rockwell mentions in his recent post “The Key that Unlocks Leadership.“
What is the key? …Believe you matter.
Believe you matter. I realized as I pondered his post that if you don’t believe you matter, the rest doesn’t matter.
It’s about believing that you can make a difference. It’s believing that what’s inside of you matters. It’s believing that you can make the world a better place. If we believe we matter, then we can move forward.
If we don’t believe we matter, and we try to move forward, it won’t last long. We will soon be forced to look at what we really believe about ourselves.
Beliefs play a huge role in our lives. We may say what we believe, but it is our actions that reveal what we believe. Sometimes, we don’t realize what we really believe until ‘stuff’ comes up. We experience anger that surprises us. We don’t take action like we thought we would. We can’t seem to move beyond a setback or disappointment. If you find your actions not in alignment with your words or what you thought you believed, dig a bit deeper. What do your actions say about your beliefs? At the core of it all, we have to believe we matter to live out of our unique design.
Believe that you matter. Then go change your world.
What’s your journey in believing that you matter? Is believing you matter the ‘key’ to leadership?
