Doing

“We become better versions of ourselves in the trenches of living rather than in the safety in plans and theory.” Charles Gilkey from Productive Living

I don’t plan as much as I use to. I still take time to reflect, to ponder, to be. I still write down goals and milestones. But, the details to get from A to B aren’t there. Maybe it’s because the straight line I saw from A to B often became an incredibly zig-zaggy line. It sometimes eventually got to B, but on a much different route than I thought.

Or, sometimes it never got to B. In the journey from A to B, C became the goal. Was B the wrong goal? Not necessarily. It just becomes part of the journey from A to C.

In fact, the zig-zag line feels more like life. Fluid. Adapting. Changing. Dancing. Instead of Rigid. Straight. Stoic. Miserable.

I like how Ron Edmondson puts it in a recent blog post:

“Look at most great inventions and they were discovered while doing something…many times while doing something totally unrelated to what was discovered…

That’s because…

New ideas come from doing…

If you want to learn to innovate…if your organization needs change…if you need some new ideas…

Do more and you’ll discover more…

Try more…Experiment more…Test more…Take more risks…

You’ll find some new ideas…”

How are we doing with the journey from A to B?
