Genuine Aliveness

Rainbow over Grand Canyon

This post is adapted from Let Me Tell You a Story by Tony Campolo.

How long have you lived?

Most likely our answer to that question will match the number of years we have been on the face of this earth.  But, as Tony Campolo so quickly responds in his book, “No! No! No! What you have told me is how long your heart has been pumping blood. My questions was, how long have you lived?”

How long have you…really lived? How long have you been genuinely alive? How long have you been genuinely present?

I am afraid that the answer to the question changes when we look at it from that perspective. Too often, we go through the motions, taking the moment for granted, being distracted with other things – that we aren’t fully present – whether I am talking with a friend, washing dishes, or viewing the Grand Canyon. Are we fully present? Are we genuinely alive? Does life still take our breath away?

Let’s choose to be fully present, to be genuinely alive. How many times will life take our breath away this week? Share those moments with us.
