Uncertainty

If we live creatively, we experience uncertainty. Jonathan Fields’s new book Uncertainty addresses this certainty.

This book couldn’t have come at a better time. I feel like I’m swimming in the ocean of uncertainty. And, for one who loves control, at times the uncertainty feels overwhelming. This book gives me hope, gives me something to throw a rope around and hang on tight, knowing I am safe in the midst of the undercurrent of uncertainty.

Living in uncertainty is scary. It’s giving up control. It’s living close to the edge. It’s vulnerable. It’s revealing. It’s extraordinary.

I can’t wait to get more into the book, but here are a few highlights from an interview with Jonathan Fields by Mark McGuinness.

  • The subtitle of the book: Turning fear and doubt into fuel for brilliance.
  • Uncertainty is a signpost that what you’re doing matters.
  • Great work requires decisions and actions in the face of uncertainty.
  • The longer you can live in the question, the more likely you’ll be to come up with truly extraordinary ideas, solutions and creations.
  • [The] vast majority of high-level creators build what I call “uncertainty scaffolding,” or strategies and practices that allow them enough baseline calm to do the things that would shut most others down.

In the book, Fields talks about ‘leaning into great waves of fear and uncertainty’. He suggests shifting our mindset to be able to do this without being overwhelmed, but to harness the energy for creativity. That’s what I want to be able to do.

How about you? How do you deal with the uncertainty that comes with living creatively?
