What Will You Stop to Start

Goal setting is great. Creating vision is important. Dreaming is necessary.

But, the rubber needs to hit the road. From my own experience this is often the most difficult step. We set goals, we create vision, we dream to help us go in the right direction. But often those steps just add more to our plate. Our plate that’s already full. Our plate that already has us super duper busy. Our plate that really doesn’t have room for anything else. In fact, one more thing just might send us over the edge.

In the midst of goal setting, creating vision, and dreaming we also need to define what we need to stop. What are the distractions? What are the things we need to quit because they take us away from our goals, our dreams? It may mean stopping some activities. It may mean stopping a thought pattern. It may mean changes in friendships.

As pointed out in a post by Leadership Freak, “The first step after dreaming is stopping; it’s the hardest step. Lack of stopping is the main reason you can’t start. It’s impossible to continue on your current course and change direction at the same time.”

The stopping may be certain attitudes, habits, and behaviors. The starting may also be certain attitude, habits, and behaviors! It’s a give and take, a two-way street. We need to stop and we need to start.

Let’s not do the starting without the stopping.

What have you experienced in the starting and the stopping?
