Where’s Your Focus?

If you’re looking sideways all the time, you’re very likely to miss the opportunities, paths, and people that are right in front of you.
- Amber Naslund from Run Your Own Race blog post

Which way are you looking? …sideways? …or in front of you?

I love the quote above. It emphasizes the best place for our focus…on the path in front of us. Too often, we look at what others are doing–wanting to do what they’re doing, or comparing ourselves to them, or thinking we’d rather have their personality, or their skills, or their strengths. In the meantime, we’re missing the people, the opportunities, the gifts right in front of us.

When we look sideways, we also tend to lose sight of the creative ways we’re designed. Instead of focusing on our own unique way of contributing to the world around us, we start focusing on following what others are doing. I am a big fan of learning from those around us. But, as we do that, let’s not forget that each of us are uniquely designed, having a one-of-a-kind combination of personality, strengths,  skills, etc.  – so my contribution to the world won’t look exactly like anyone else.

What about you? Have you ever been trapped in ‘sideways’ living? What did you learn?

May we choose to look forward—and not miss the people, the opportunities, the paths, and the gifts right  in front of us.
